2012 Street Tree Pruning

Forestry WorkersAs part of the Village’s Urban Forestry Program, the Village will be pruning & trimming street trees within the right-of-way between February 20 and March 15, 2012.

Per Municipal Code 8.24, the Village of Bellevue is responsible for the planting and maintenance of all street trees in the municipality. The Village has adopted a ten year urban forestry  management program to maintain  public trees; including regular assessment of their health, safety, & condition, pruning, removal/replanting.

Scheduled tree pruning is planned for the following areas in 2012:

Pruning Area #1 (map)

East of Juneberry Drive / West of Ontario Road / North of Eaton Road (Streets:  Ontario Rd, Turquoise Tr, Cinnabar Way, Emerald Dr, Blue Moon Dr, Diamond Dr/Ct, Opal Rd, Mayflower Rd, Happiness Cir, Blue Spruce Dr/Ct, Juneberry Dr, Sleepy Hollow Dr, Oak Park Dr )

Pruning Area #2 (map)

East of Manitowoc Road / West of Ontario Road / South of Eaton Road (Streets:  Essen Rd, Emerald Dr, Warm Springs Dr/Ct, Joy Ln, Brighton Pl, Dorset Dr, Spring Creek Cir, Shefield Ct, Lucerne Cir, Madrid Dr, Wiltshire Ct,   Nottingham Ct, London Rd, Continental Dr, Tunis Dr, Oslo Ct, Helsinki Rd, Monaco Dr, Manitowoc Rd)

The work will be performed by a private contractor following ANSI Standard Practices for Tree Care Operations-Pruning (ANSI A 300 (Part I) Current Edition) as identified by the Village’s Tree Ordinance and Arboricultural Specifications Manual.  Village staff will be inspecting the work to ensure that it meets specifications.

Common reasons for pruning are to remove dead, dying or diseased branches and/or to remove crowded or rubbing limbs. Trees may be pruned to increase light and air penetration to the inside of the tree’s crown or to the landscape below.   Lastly, a tree’s crown may be raised to allow cars, school buses, garbage trucks and snow plows to operate without contacting low hanging branches; causing significant damage to the vehicle and/or tree.

The Village’s public tree population consists of more than 3,400 trees, and more than 30 different species that range in age, size and condition.  The Village has been annually awarded Tree City USA status from the Arbor Day Foundation since 2003.
